Chapter 4 - Who Are You?

As the old lady started crying, I was clueless about how to console her. With little courage, I asked . What happened to your husband ?   And tears started rolling down her eyes like a waterfall. Cursing myself, I pretended like fainting to avoid further awkwardness. Only when I opened my eyes, I realized that I've slept for 12 hours straight under the old fan that rotates only because of the wind blowing through the window, surrounded by patients and the fragrance of medicine that I always hated.   As I looked around for someone to attend me, I saw a nurse bringing in a new patient in stretcher towards my bed. Why are you still here? Vacate the bed now or pay for an extra day if u want to stay. Clueless as usual, I got up and walked towards the nursing station to enquire about the old lady. The doctor told me that she left last night after paying my hospital and medicine bill. I was back on the street, But all of a sudden I was feeling a bit of belongingness. I have bee...

Chapter 3 - Valentines Day

As the lady walked away, I noticed that her basket was full of red roses. What day of the year is it, I asked myself.  With aging, my orientation to date, time and place has gradually disoriented. With the dead turtle laying next to me and waves washing my feet, my vision was going out of focus. The sound of the waves echoed in my head, and the turtle doesn't stink anymore. I tried to get up and I collapsed instantly.  Am I having a Heart attack, Is it some kind of infection from the turtle, Is it a Heat Stroke, Am I Dead  and thousand more questions were running in my mind.  I could envision myself being surrounded by couples dressed in red clicking pictures and talking indistinctly.  Then came the old lady, pushing people aside with her empty flower basket.  I know this man,  she exclaimed. By sprinkling water on my face, she tried to wake me up. I wanted to open my eyes and say hi, but I was not able to. With the help of a local chap...

Chapter 2 - Dog Remembers

As i continued walking along the shore, I was singing aloud " Adadaa mazhaidaa adai mazhaidaa, Azhagaa sirichaa puyal mazhaidaa " and few more songs related to rain. Is that a turtle!!!  I asked myself on sighting a turtle-like structure moving to and fro with the flow of waves in the heavy rain. I remember reading an article about Olive Ridley Sea Turtles who come to the shores of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh during the end of Monsoon season to lay eggs. With the excitement of seeing a turtle laying eggs, I dropped my bag, took off my shoes and started crawling in four legs slowly towards the turtle. As the distance decreased, I was able to notice that it was not swimming but floating on the surface of the sea.  The rain stopped and the sun emerged victoriously over the pale and exhausted clouds. As I was standing there and looking at the nylon fishnet which was strangled around the neck of the poor turtle, I heard a sympathetic voice saying "ethana vatti sonnaalu...
